This means ‘body, one’s person; heart, mind; flesh, meat’ in Japanese, pronounced SHIN or mi.  In Chinese it’s shēn, and means ‘body, life, oneself, one’s morality and conduct.’

The character represents, so they say, a fat man or a pregnant woman. Is that because they have more ‘body’ than regular folks? You can see the belly well in the ancient character:

but it’s not clear what the tail-like bit is about.
