As kaku, this character means 'to write' or 'to draw.' As fumi, it means 'books; letter, note.'


The upper part represents a hand (the three upper horizontal lines, connected by the sidepiece on the right) holding an upright writing brush (ITSU).

The lower part of the character is an alteration of

which means 'to say,' even though as written in kaku, it looks like


NICHI or hi, meaning 'sun; day.'
