話
This character means ‘talk, conversation, story.’ It is pronounced WA or hanashi in Japanese, huà in Chinese. The elements on both sides represent a tongue sticking out of a mouth. The tongue on the left has a couple of extra furrows, it appears.
In Mainland China they use a simplified version:
话.
The logic for the simplification is a mystery.
If those are tongues coming out of mouths in the archaic characters above, I’m scared.
