寒
This character means ‘cold, chilly, midwinter.’ It’s pronounced KAN and samui in Japanese, hán in Chinese.
It looks a bit like the character for ‘winter,’ KOTD 0006:
冬.
寒
is said to represent a poor man (the legs) with hay (the criss-crossed lines) packed inside his house, under roof (the highest horizontal line with center stroke and ‘eaves’), to protect him from frost and ice (the two strokes below).
